TAMPA, FL, January 16, 2013 – An Acoustifence barrier recently installed near a noisy exposed aerator motor at the Hillsborough County Northwest Regional Facility resulted in an immediate and significant reduction in noise pollution for neighboring residents.
The facility is part of a 1,500-acre multi-use tract owned by Hillsborough County. It is a Type 1 advanced wastewater treatment facility built to process five million gallons of wastewater per day. The facility is located on a 67-acre parcel of land 10890 South Mobley Road in Hillsborough County Florida. A residential community called Highland Park is located near the county facility.
Last year, members of the Highland Park Residential Community voiced their complaints about loud whining noises coming into their community from the nearby county facility. The facility took action to find a solution to the noise issue. In residential areas, road traffic noise is usually the major source of noise, with air conditioning/heat pumps, generators, construction, and industrial noises also problems typically.
Wastewater is sewage, storm water and water that are used for various purposes around the community. Unless properly treated, wastewater can harm public health and the environment. It is not uncommon across the United States for wastewater treatment facilities like Northwest to be located within hearing range of residents living in a particular area.
The wastewater treatment facility noise source was a 200-HP Carrousel vertical, high efficiency aerator drive motor located on top of the facility’s 24-foot Oxidation Aeration Basin structure according to Flint Seth, general manager of bio solids production and maintenance at the Hillsborough County Northwest Water Reclamation Facility.
Doug Fisher of the Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department worked with Acoustiblok to devise an economical solution consisting of an L-shaped frame barrier with four 6 X 30 foot-Acoustifence outdoor noise reduction panels secured to it. Acoustifence is a product of Acoustiblok Corporation. Witt Fence Company of Riverview, Fla., was contacted by Hillsborough County personnel to install the barrier.
From a technical standpoint, Acoustifence is an advanced sound barrier. A sound barrier, by its own named definition, is put between the noise source and the listener. Some barriers can be made of virtually anything that sound does not penetrate. There are however, differences and distinct advantages in some over others. Unlike a concrete block wall, which in one respect is a good sound barrier, the Acoustifence actually flexes with certain frequencies, especially very low frequencies. In the process of sound waves physically moving it, the product transforms sound wave energy into inaudible internal friction energy. A concrete block wall would not do this. As the Acoustifence is only 1/8 of an inch thick, it is very easy to position it closer to the noise source. The closer a barrier is to the noise source the more restricting it becomes to the initial sound waves.

It comes in 6 X 30 foot-sheets. It is one of the most effective first steps in reducing noise for many applications including industrial, commercial, and residential. The amount of noise it reduces however is much related to other reflective structures in the area.
Sound pressure is measured in decibels. The average person can hear sounds starting at 0 to 1 decibel. A typical conversation occurs at 60 decibels – not loud enough to cause damage. An idling bulldozer (not bulldozing) is loud enough at 85 decibels that it can cause permanent damage after only 1 work day (8 hours). If a sound reaches 85 decibels or stronger, it can cause permanent damage to a person’s hearing with prolonged exposure. The amount of time a person listens to a sound affects how much damage it will cause.
A noise meter was used to measure the difference in sound before and after the installation of the noise barrier fence at the wastewater facility. Typical noise from these Carrousel vertical aerator motors ranges from 80-83 decibels from three feet away according to the manufacturer. From 10 feet away, the noise measured 79 decibels before installation of the Acoustifence began and registered 69 decibels immediately after the fence was in place. In a 10 decibel decrease in sound level, perceived loudness is cut in half to the human ear.
"While we were pleased with the reduction in sound decibels picked up by the meter, the most significant difference that we noticed was the reduction in noise heard by the ear. The reduction in noise felt significantly higher than what registered on the sound meter," said Seth.
According to OSHA, typical engine noise, mainly caused by mechanical and combustion forces, can typically range from 100 - 121 decibels measured at approximately 10 feet.
Besides the proven and tested sound reduction qualities of Acoustifence, another beneficial quality of the product is that it is quick and easy to install. "Once we determine the technical solution to a noise issue, the installation of our products is not time consuming or labor intensive," said Lahnie Johnson, President and Founder of Acoustiblok.
Installation of the sound barrier at the Hillsborough County facility was fast and they encountered no unexpected problems. "It took only one day to install the barrier and it resulted in an immediate decrease in directional noise for our facility," Seth said.

While the solution to the noise issue at the wastewater treatment facility was not a complex one, it was an effective one for Hillsborough County. "The Acoustifence barrier made a difference and we are very pleased with it. We have not received any new complaints about the motor noise since the installation of the barrier fence so that’s a good sign so far. We are currently planning to build additional barrier fences for some of the other vertical aerator motors we have on site," Seth added.
While Hillsborough County is happy with how the small amount of Acoustifence quieted the large pump, Johnson sees this as the first of literally thousands of similar pumps around the country and overseas hat may need a similar noise abatement solution.

Using 4 x 4 posts and Acoustifence material, Provincetown, Massachusetts contractor Deborah Paine built a framed noise barrier to block the ear-piercing sound emanating from a Restaurant situated just feet away from a neighboring three-story apartment building.
PROVINCETOWN, Massachusetts, SEPTEMBER 12, 2011 – Residents of a small apartment building set just three-feet from the high decibel exhaust fan of a neighboring restaurant are sleeping easier tonight, thanks to a newly constructed sound barrier utilizing Acoustifence noise abatement material that cut the noise in half.
After discussing soundproofing options with Steve Hibbens, an acoustical consultant at Acoustiblok, Inc. in Tampa, Florida, Provincetown building contractor Deborah Paine, who happens to reside in the affected apartment building, collaborated with the building’s owner and the owner of Sal’s Place Restaurant to design and build a noise barrier enclosure around the fan. Using pressure treated wood to create a support structure for the Acoustifence soundproofing material, Paine built a nine-foot-tall structure, with a hinged door to provide access for maintenance of the fan, and an exhaust port at the top of the unit facing the street, to provide unrestricted air flow.
The 1600 CFM industrial exhaust fan was installed midsummer, when Massachusetts was already experiencing record-breaking temperatures exceeding 97-degrees. Measuring 75 decibels, the fan was so loud that apartment residents had to close their windows despite the scorching weather just to get relief from the noise and greasy air blasting directly at their apartments from the fan.
Paine, owner of Deborah Paine, Inc., a design/build firm in neighboring Truro Massachusetts, says she has designed and installed soundproofing in previous projects over the years. She decided to use Acoustifence, a product of the Acoustiblok Corporation, for the first time with this project.
“We have purchased noise attenuation material from a Connecticut company in the past, but they’re phenomenally expensive and it turns out that the Acoustifence is a better quality material and more resilient than what we had purchased from the Connecticut company in the past,” she said.
The results, Paine says, are even better than they had hoped for.
“We can open our windows, and we can sleep at night,” Paine said of the 50- to 60-percent noise reduction provided by the single layer Acoustifence noise barrier. Paine used a decibel reader to capture before and after noise levels, which measured 72- to 75-decibels before the Acoustifence noise barrier was put in place, and 62-decibels after.
“We’re still aware of it, and we are considering adding a layer of QuietFiber to the area immediately surrounding the fan to cut the sound even more, but we’re very happy with the 12- to 15-decibel reduction we have already.”
Translated in terms of perceived sound, a 12-decibel reduction cuts the noise level by 56.4-percent, and a 15-decibel reduction cuts noise by 64.64-percent.
“This is a creative and effective application for Acoustifence, which ordinarily can be hung on an existing fence,” said Lahnie Johnson, president of Acoustiblok, Inc.
“Acoustifence is a perfect choice for this type of industrial noise, which is so disruptive to the peace and quiet of close neighbors. Ms. Paine thought this project out carefully and thoroughly in order to create a solution that would benefit all three stories of this apartment building, all of which were exposed to the exasperating fan noise.”

SEATTLE, Washington – November 2, 2010 -- When the Link light rail system first began running in July 2009, Rainier Valley and Tukwilla residents in south Seattle were unprepared for the screeching, tearing and grating sounds that began filling their air space 20 hours per day, seven days a week.
Sound Transit Authority’s Justin Garrod, project manager for the Link rail system was called upon to find a solution to the high noise level that exceeded federal standards in south Seattle and dramatically interfered with the area residents’ quality of life. After doing the research and trying other methods, Gerrod and his staff discovered Acoustifence, which is comprised of a unique sound deadening material - a perfect temporary fix, Gerrod thought, until a permanent solution could be found.
After simply hanging the Acoustifence from 5,000 feet of guardrail flanking the actual rail tracks, Gerrod quickly realized he had found a permanent solution.
“We’re convinced this is it, this is the answer to the noise problem,” Garrod said. “Acoustifence met all the criteria, it’s cost effective, easy to maintain and an excellent sound deadening material.”
Additionally, installation was easy as the Acoustifence is easily cut to size for a custom fit and attached with supplied industrial strength nylon ties connecting the material to the existing guardrail.
“We combined the Acoustifence material with rail grinding (another noise reduction measure) and the combined results were exactly what we needed,” Garrod said.
When Sound Transit was originally designing the Link light rail system, noise levels were predicted by examining studies on the noise output of other similar light rail transit systems in other cities.
Based on the expected noise levels, mitigation features were designed into the original project. These features included sound-insulating some of the homes along Martin Luther King Jr. Way S. in south Seattle and constructing noise walls in Tukwila. Still, the noise deadening measures taken did not work for all areas of Tukwila, with some still exceeding federal standards. (Solid barrier walls do little to mitigate rail noise. Solid walls reflect the noise back at the rail car, which in turn reflects the noise back over the top of the wall.)
Steve Hibbens, rail noise consultant for Acoustiblok, the company that manufactures and distributes Acoustifence, said the solution worked so well, Sound Transit Authority plans to order more of the patented noise abatement material to keep in stock. Hibbens is also working with Atlanta’s rail system, MARTA, implementing Acoustiblok All Weather Sound Panels to absorb rail noise.
“Sound Transit Authority is really happy with the results,” Hibbens said. “There have been several write-ups about the project success in Seattle area papers.
“The neighbors are happy too.”

TAMPA, Florida – As any landscape professional already knows, installing trees and vegetation as a visual berm between roadway traffic and residences may be aesthetically pleasing, but these elements are not effective noise control barriers. Acoustiblok Inc., a leader in noise abatement for both inside and outside installations, has announced the release of Acoustifence, a revolutionary new defense against outdoor noise pollution.
The fact is, foliage or trees on earth berms can actually increase noise. Since sound is dispersed in much the same way as light, it will penetrate and reflect off the foliage in all directions, including that side of the berm that is meant to be peaceful and quiet.
Although the higher the berm, the better the sound deflection, it is far more affordable and more practical to increase the berm height by installing Acoustifence than it is to add fill to the berm.

A simple and economical noise abatement solution for both residential and industrial usage, Acoustifence is a 1/8-inch (3mm) thick material measuring 6-feet (1.82 meters) high by 30-feet (9.14 meters) long with brass eyelets along the top and bottom edge for easy attachment to any chain link fence or other framework.
