Acoustifence® Noise Barrier Cuts Restaurant Exhaust Fan Noise In Half

Using 4 x 4 posts and Acoustifence material, Provincetown, Massachusetts contractor Deborah Paine built a framed noise barrier to block the ear-piercing sound emanating from a Restaurant situated just feet away from a neighboring three-story apartment building.

PROVINCETOWN, MASS (USA), SEPTEMBER 12, 2011 – Residents of a small apartment building set just three-feet from the high decibel exhaust fan of a neighboring restaurant are sleeping easier tonight, thanks to a newly constructed sound barrier utilizing Acoustifence noise abatement material that cut the noise in half.

After discussing soundproofing options with Steve Hibbens, an acoustical consultant at Acoustiblok, Inc. in Tampa, Florida, Provincetown building contractor Deborah Paine, who happens to reside in the affected apartment building, collaborated with the building’s owner and the owner of Sal’s Place Restaurant to design and build a noise barrier enclosure around the fan. Using pressure treated wood to create a support structure for the Acoustifence soundproofing material, Paine built a nine-foot-tall structure, with a hinged door to provide access for maintenance of the fan, and an exhaust port at the top of the unit facing the street, to provide unrestricted air flow.

The 1600 CFM industrial exhaust fan was installed midsummer, when Massachusetts was already experiencing record-breaking temperatures exceeding 97-degrees. Measuring 75 decibels, the fan was so loud that apartment residents had to close their windows despite the scorching weather just to get relief from the noise and greasy air blasting directly at their apartments from the fan.

Paine, owner of Deborah Paine, Inc., a design/build firm in neighboring Truro Massachusetts, says she has designed and installed soundproofing in previous projects over the years. She decided to use Acoustifence, a product of the Acoustiblok Corporation, for the first time with this project.

“We have purchased noise attenuation material from a Connecticut company in the past, but they’re phenomenally expensive and it turns out that the Acoustifence is a better quality material and more resilient than what we had purchased from the Connecticut company in the past,” she said.

The results, Paine says, are even better than they had hoped for.

“We can open our windows, and we can sleep at night,” Paine said of the 50- to 60-percent noise reduction provided by the single layer Acoustifence noise barrier. Paine used a decibel reader to capture before and after noise levels, which measured 72- to 75-decibels before the Acoustifence noise barrier was put in place, and 62-decibels after.

“We’re still aware of it, and we are considering adding a layer of QuietFiber to the area immediately surrounding the fan to cut the sound even more, but we’re very happy with the 12- to 15-decibel reduction we have already.”

Translated in terms of perceived sound, a 12-decibel reduction cuts the noise level by 56.4-percent, and a 15-decibel reduction cuts noise by 64.64-percent.

“This is a creative and effective application for Acoustifence, which ordinarily can be hung on an existing fence,” said Lahnie Johnson, president of Acoustiblok, Inc.

Ms. Paine thought this project out carefully and thoroughly in order to create a solution that would benefit all three stories of this apartment building, all of which were exposed to the exasperating fan noise.”

Acoustiblok Wallcover Used Used in A/V Recording Room at Hillsborough Community College

Acoustiblok Wallcover was installed in a classroom on the HCC campus, converting the room to a soundproof recording studio without removing drywall. Acoustiblok Wallcover was installed directly on top of the existing drywall, making it a no-construction soundproofing project that was completed in two days.

 

TAMPA, Florida, September 12, 2011 – Faced with the need to create a soundproof environment for sensitive audio and video recording projects, officials at Hillsborough Community College’s Corporate Training Center on Davis Islands transformed a small classroom into a soundproof recording studio by installing Acoustiblok Wallcover® on top of the existing drywall.

The HCC recording studio, which took less than two days to complete, marked the first-ever commercial application of Acoustiblok-Wallcover.

Acoustiblok-Wallcover is the first scientifically designed noise reduction solution available that is applied directly on top of existing wall surfaces (including concrete). It installs easily with adhesive spray and requires just two or three people to align and hang it properly, making it a perfect DIY project for silencing any room.

Years in the making, Acoustiblok Wallcover incorporates a unique aerospace nanotechnology laminate which provides the acoustical breakthrough needed for this type of application.

The recording room is used for creating e-learning materials for the Hillsborough Community College faculty and staff, according to HCC Technical Specialist Steve Barry.

“We record video and audio, and create multimedia components to use in lessons,” Barry said.

“Some of the work we do is for corporate clients. We have boom mics, a high-definition video camera, professional lighting, and a souped-up high-end PC to create professional multimedia audio and video interactive presentations.”

The equipment is also used to conduct live webinars for the HCC community and for open-enrollment students.

Two HCC maintenance staff members attached the Acoustiblok Wallcover material to the room’s four walls using spray adhesive. A simple box cutter was used to create cutouts for electrical sockets and light switch panels. Each section was aligned directly to each other, with one installer working from the top and one from the bottom to align and press the material securely to the wall.

Acoustiblok-Wallcover’s silver fabric finish was painted a pale yellow, rendering the noise barrier material undetectable. HCC was the first to install Acoustiblok-Wallcover, an option that spared them the expense and mess of removing the existing drywall to attach Acoustiblok’s traditional 3mm noise abatement material directly to the studs, which would have required hanging new drywall, and time-consuming permitting and bureaucratic red tape.

“The Acoustiblok-Wallcover has been great at keeping out the noise from people in the hallway and the surrounding offices,” Barry said. “Noises at that decibel range are now almost nonexistent; the room is far superior to what we had before this installation.”

Barry said that once the trim and caulking was completed, a coat of paint gave the room the polished look that they were after.

Before installing the Acoustiblok Wallcover, Acoustiblok’s standard 3mm sound abatement material was installed in the room’s ceiling to block noise from above, creating the serious level of soundproofing necessary for recording.

Lahnie Johnson, president and founder of Acoustiblok, Inc., says the application of Acoustiblok-Wallcover in the HCC sound room, and the standard 3mm Acoustiblok material laid inside the ceiling tiles provides a perfect example for achieving substantial results with minimal skilled labor and investment.

“Before the development of Acoustiblok Wallcover, no scientifically proven noise barrier solution existed that could be applied to an existing wall.”
