All Weather Sound Panels Give Football Fans a Better Experience at Illinois State University’s Hancock Stadium

TAMPA, Fla., December 11, 2013 – Acoustiblok’s All Weather Sound Panel noise barriers installed under the premium seating section of the new east side grandstand at Illinois State University’s $27.6 million renovated football stadium diminishes loud compressor noise and gives fans a better game day experience.

All Weather Sound Panels are industrial grade acoustical barrier assemblies used to block excessive noise in industrial, commercial, institutional and community environments. These unique noise barrier panels are not just “sound absorbing” but also “sound blocking.” This allows them to not only absorb the loud mechanical noise, but also stop noise from penetrating through the panel.

The renovation of Hancock Stadium was needed to replace the outdated structures in the stadium that had been the home to Illinois State University since the early 1960s. The stadium lacked modern amenities and premium seating and entertainment areas that are common in today’s modern college football stadiums. These premium areas are vital to bringing in additional revenue for the university.

The renovation focused on the stadium’s east side area which was rebuilt and transformed into the stadium’s new modern 7-story front entrance and premium seating area. The new east side structure now includes a 5,500 sq. ft. indoor club, seven private luxury boxes, catering area, more modern and expanded concession areas and restrooms, bleacher back seating areas, and a state-of-the art press box among other improvements. The improvements have doubled the seating capacity of Hancock Stadium and have created a stadium that the community can now be proud of.

These new indoor areas require ventilation, cooling, heating and also refrigeration for concession and entertainment areas which require the use of noisy compressors. These machines typically result in a combination of two noise sources: noise that was already there in the signal, now amplified; and noise created by the actual circuit design and components of the compressor. Compressors often draw complaints for loud humming, rumbling, scraping, thumping and vibrating, rattling, squealing, or pop and bang sounds.

At Hancock Stadium and most stadiums in general, the noisy compressors and other mechanical equipment are located under the concourse level which typically pose a noise problem if not properly addressed with an acoustical barrier like Acoustiblok’s All Weather Sound Panels. These panels are available in various sizes up to 4 x 12 foot, are approximately 2.44-inches thick with aluminum frame and have a perforated aluminum grille. They are all welded, with tubular enforced eyelets in the frame allowing use of anchors or tapcons for wall mounting. All Weather Sound Panels contain the company’s signature product, Acoustiblok sound mitigating material which is a 1/8-inch thick heavy mineral-filled viscoelastic material which stops sound from penetrating through it. This is a very meaningful advantage over conventional "sound absorbing" panels which stop sound reflections but are poor sound barriers.

It took us a day to determine how we were going to construct and fasten the barrier under the sloped area. We undid the seating bracing and threaded them through the L cuts we made. Once we had the installation sequence down, we had no problems.”

VANCOUVER, BC, October 22, 2012 – Raicor Contracting, Ltd. earned the Northwest Wall & Ceiling Bureau’s Outstanding Project of the Year 2012 award for the visually spectacular LDS Temple located about 50 miles southeast of Vancouver in Langley, BC.  Included in the project’s flawless design are Acoustiblok’s All Weather Sound Panels, custom fit to create a clean, architecturally attractive noise barrier for the Temple’s roofless ancillary building that houses an industrial generator and HVAC systems.

Project Manager Timo Orava of Raicor worked with acoustic specialist Steve Hibbens, who recommended the All Weather Sound Panels for the project. Not only did the Temple officials want the noise reduced for Church members to worship in peace and quiet, the solution had to offer a clean, architecturally attractive appearance in keeping with the meticulously designed interior.

The LDS Temple which was built in the spirit of Solomon’s Temple of the Old Testament, according to Orava. Extreme care was taken not only in the design, but in the execution, which took more than three years to complete.

“The LDS Temple is an inspiring monument that Church leaders wanted built to perfection, right down to the very last detail,” Orava says. “It’s a visually stunning structure built to last, ideally, for hundreds of years.

“Church leaders’ interest was in getting a completed structure that is pleasing to God’s eye, and nothing less would suffice.”

The project was challenging for Orava’s team at Raicor because of the extremely high building standards in place, and the Temple leaders’ meticulous requirements. With a zero-tolerance for deficiencies, from the drywall to the wall sconces, the project demanded faultless workmanship. Orava said the Acoustiblok All Weather Sound Panels were no exception, and needed to fit exacting specifications in the structure.

“One-eighth of an inch off anywhere, and they would not have fit,” he said. “But the Acoustiblok team custom cut and finished each panel to the exact dimensions, and they all fit together flawlessly.”

Nineteen standard 4 foot x 8 foot panels and 13 custom sized panels were used to create the precision noise barrier that Temple leaders wanted; clean, aesthetically pleasing, and most important, effective.

“After the panels went in, the noise issue was resolved, which was surprising because the building that houses this noisy industrial equipment has no roof,” Orava says. “The noise is no longer a problem.”

HOUSTON, Texas, February 16, 2011 – Controlling conveyor noise at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston became a serious issue when airport TSA staff complained that the clamor emanating from a conveyor system near their station was making communication impossible during normal work routines.

Vanderlande Industries U.S., Inc., who installed the conveyor system at the airport in 2004, was asked recently to correct the noise problem six years after the conveyor system went in. 

In November 2010, Vanderlande contractors installed Acoustiblok® “All Weather Sound Panels” in the space between the conveyor and the TSA work area, immediately deadening the conveyor-caused sound reverberations and allowing TSA workers the ability to speak and carry out their duties without interruption.

Carl Morris, senior project manager for Vanderlande Industries, said the Acoustiblok panels created a significant improvement in the work area for airport staff.

“The Acoustiblok is doing a great job, they can hear better and talk to each other at a much more normal level,” Morris said.

Conveyor systems like the one used in the George Bush Airport to move baggage from the terminal to aircrafts, are notorious sources of non-stop noise. On any conveyor system, for instance, factors such as speed and the number of moving parts affect the decibel level (dBA) of the sound.

Normal conversation is about 45 decibels. Various conveyors operate at different decibel levels, depending on type, construction, use with other equipment and placement in a facility. Many produce noise in the mid-70s to low-80s decibel range, according to material-handling sources. OSHA's noise limit is 85 decibels at ear level.

The conveyor at George Bush Airport was emitting noise levels that, while not high enough to be damaging to the staff’s hearing, were high enough to interfere with normal levels of conversation.

Some acoustical barriers prevent transmission of sound between the noise source and the employee, but the sound is reflected back toward the source instead of being absorbed. As the heavy, limp Acoustiblok material vibrates from the sound, it actually “transforms” the acoustical energy into “inaudible friction energy.”

Airport officials all over the world are working to find ways to reduce high noise levels in their terminals.  The new, $150 million Sikhuphe International Airport in the Kingdom of Swaziland in southern Africa addressed the problem in advance by designing Acoustiblok into the terminal’s construction.

Acoustiblok has been proven effective in reducing industrial and transportation noise exposure. This type of noise often exceeds limits recommended by the World Health Organization and contributes to noise-induced hearing loss.

All Weather Sound Panels Improve Sound Quality in Courtroom

Acoustiblok All Weather Sound Panels were installed in the Pinellas County Jail to improve sound quality in courtroom videoconferencing.

LARGO, Florida – Videoconferencing between Pinellas County jail inmates and the adjacent Pinellas County Court saves money by doing away with prisoner transportation and the extraneous costs and inconveniences that go with escorting prisoners to court for
arraignment and other initial appearances. Florida pioneered videoconferencing for prisons in the mid 1990’s and many states have followed suit, but like most new technology the wrinkles must be ironed out.

Unfortunately, when the state-of-the-art video technology that brought the Pinellas County Jail into the 21st century was installed in 2008, it went into 20th-century concrete block rooms, the building envelope of choice for correctional institutions. And while the audio video system was working correctly, the judges were having a difficult time understanding what people were saying in these important proceedings. The problem was due to sound reverberations and echo in the room as all the concrete walls, floors and ceilings are not only parallel to each other but are also totally sound reflective.

By early 2009 Win Ellwood, technology manager for the Sixth Court, concluded that something had to be done, but at the same time understood that adding carpet and sound absorbing ceiling tiles to such an institution was out of the question, and acoustical results would be minimal at best.

“We needed a solution that was durable, a solution that was indestructible,” Ellwood said of their search for a sound abatement answer. “It had to be something that could be cleaned easily, could not be torn off the wall, is totally fireproof and adheres to all current building codes.”

The Acoustiblok All Weather Sound Panel” not only met all of these requirements (including its ability to be hosed down for cleaning) but had the highest sound absorption achievable in the industry (NRC 1.00). The panel was tested by the Miami Dade County hurricane testing lab to withstand 270 mph wind load! As a point of reference, 260 mph is considered the maximum level of a tornado.

The patent pending panels are available in various sizes up to 4 x 12 foot, approximately 2¼-inches thick with aluminum frame and perforated aluminum grille, all welded, with tubular enforced islets in the frame allowing use of anchors or tapcons for wall mounting.

Strike Industries of Pompano Beach, Florida, a company specializing in videoconferencing technology in correctional institutions, installed the videoconferencing technology at the Pinellas County Jail and Courthouse. Strike General Manager Patrick Sellati said the Acoustiblok installation solved numerous audio problems brought about by the complete lack of sound absorption in the jail rooms.

“Audio is always a challenge in videoconferencing in correctional institutions,” Sellati said. “Jails and prisons are primarily concrete which interferes with these systems, one issue always overlooked by the architects.”

Sellati said that videoconferencing is revolutionizing prisons across the United States, creating new options not only for courtroom appearances, but for inmate visitation and medical conferencing as well. Noise abatement solutions like Acoustiblok are necessary to best integrate the high tech videoconferencing equipment with the acoustic deficiencies inherent in penitentiaries.

Eric Johnson, an associate of Ellwood’s at the Sixth District Court Technology Office, says that installing Acoustiblok all-weather sound panels in the jail rooms was an instant fix for the audio dysfunction that was causing severe communications problems.

“We love the product, it works beautifully” Johnson said after the Acoustiblok installation was complete and tested. “When this all began, we did a serious search for a sound abatement solution and the Acoustiblok all-weather sound panel is by far superior
to anything else out there on the market.”

Acoustiblok worked so well, in fact, that jail officials have already contracted to have it installed in four remaining videoconferencing rooms. Work was completed in mid-September.

The Acoustiblok all-weather sound panel not only absorbs more sound than any other panel made, but also contains the unique Acoustiblok material itself, a 1/8-inch thick heavy mineral-filled viscoelastic material which stops sound from penetrating through it.

The UL approved soundproofing material has taken years to develop. Just one thin 1/8-inch layer of Acoustiblok in a standard stud wall can reduce more sound than 12-inches of concrete.

Acoustiblok is usually stapled or screwed to studs before drywalling and is easily cut with a utility knife. While other materials attempt to “block” or “absorb” sound, Acoustiblok does neither. As the heavy, limp Acoustiblok material vibrates from
