VANCOUVER, BC, October 22, 2012 – Raicor Contracting, Ltd. earned the Northwest Wall & Ceiling Bureau’s Outstanding Project of the Year 2012 award for the visually spectacular LDS Temple located about 50 miles southeast of Vancouver in Langley, BC.  Included in the project’s flawless design are Acoustiblok’s All Weather Sound Panels, custom fit to create a clean, architecturally attractive noise barrier for the Temple’s roofless ancillary building that houses an industrial generator and HVAC systems.

Project Manager Timo Orava of Raicor worked with acoustic specialist Steve Hibbens, who recommended the All Weather Sound Panels for the project. Not only did the Temple officials want the noise reduced for Church members to worship in peace and quiet, the solution had to offer a clean, architecturally attractive appearance in keeping with the meticulously designed interior.

The LDS Temple which was built in the spirit of Solomon’s Temple of the Old Testament, according to Orava. Extreme care was taken not only in the design, but in the execution, which took more than three years to complete.

“The LDS Temple is an inspiring monument that Church leaders wanted built to perfection, right down to the very last detail,” Orava says. “It’s a visually stunning structure built to last, ideally, for hundreds of years.

“Church leaders’ interest was in getting a completed structure that is pleasing to God’s eye, and nothing less would suffice.”

The project was challenging for Orava’s team at Raicor because of the extremely high building standards in place, and the Temple leaders’ meticulous requirements. With a zero-tolerance for deficiencies, from the drywall to the wall sconces, the project demanded faultless workmanship. Orava said the Acoustiblok All Weather Sound Panels were no exception, and needed to fit exacting specifications in the structure.

“One-eighth of an inch off anywhere, and they would not have fit,” he said. “But the Acoustiblok team custom cut and finished each panel to the exact dimensions, and they all fit together flawlessly.”

Nineteen standard 4 foot x 8 foot panels and 13 custom sized panels were used to create the precision noise barrier that Temple leaders wanted; clean, aesthetically pleasing, and most important, effective.

“After the panels went in, the noise issue was resolved, which was surprising because the building that houses this noisy industrial equipment has no roof,” Orava says. “The noise is no longer a problem.”

High Velocity Blower Noise in Pharmaceutical Lab Resolved

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, October 11, 2012 – Acoustiblok, Inc., announced today that the recent installation of Acoustiblok noise blocking material and QuietFiber sound absorbing material at the Ethical Labs production plant in Santo Domingo has provided enough noise abatement to lower noise levels in a louvered structure housing industrial high velocity blowers by 71 percent.

The Acoustiblok and QuietFiber installation, conducted by Carlos Montas, the Dominican Republic representative for Acoustiblok, Inc., lowered decibel levels from 80dB to 62dB, even with a portion of the louvers remaining open.

Montas, owner of Edelca – the industrial power engineering company that prepared the electrical system of the entire pharmaceutical production plant – says the project required layering Acoustiblok 3mm soundproofing material in the structure first, followed by a layer of QuietFiber sound absorbing material on top of the Acoustiblok, on both the interior walls and door of the metal structure.

Representatives of Ethical Labs said they were thrilled with the results, which took the unbearably loud blower noise down to a decibel level that was no longer a distraction to anyone.

“We are totally impressed with how well the products worked,” says Carlos Mendez of Ethical Labs. “When the project was half way done we could already hear a difference, it’s amazing.”

Montas, who designs and installs industrial emergency generators throughout the Caribbean’s coastal regions, installs QuietFiber in all of his projects to deaden industrial noise.  Both the Acoustiblok and Quiet Fiber materials are easily cut to fit around electric conduits, and secured to the walls and ceiling with standard insulation stick pins.

The sound deadening qualities of the layered Acoustiblok and QuietFiber materials will help to protect the pharmaceutical plant’s employees and visitors from the high volume industrial noise contained within the enclosure.

Founder and President Lahnie Johnson this week approved a working agreement with Carlos Montas as Acoustiblok’s manufacturing representative in the Dominican Republic. Montas, Engineering Manager of Electicidad del Caribe SRL (EDELCA) in Santo Domingo, will represent Acoustiblok sound abatement products throughout the Dominican Republic.

Montas, a native of the Dominican Republic, is a 2005 graduate of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC). Industrial noise pollution from back-up generators is a growing problem in the Dominican Republic and throughout the world. One generator designer installed QuietFiber noise absorbing material to lower the decibel levels at the newly constructed Galleria 360 mall in Santo Domingo.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, May 15, 2012 – Installation of 18,000 square feet of non-fiberlass QuietFiber® noise absorbing material has been completed in the massive generator room of the newly constructed, 750,000 square foot Galleria 360 mall in Santo Domingo.

QuietFiber, a product of Acoustiblok, Inc. in Tampa, Florida, was installed on the ceiling and walls of the mall’s generator and substation rooms. These rooms house the industrial emergency generators necessary to keep power running in this coastal area of the Caribbean, plagued by frequent power outages.

The Galleria 360’s industrial generators, installed by Santo Domingo-based Troncoso & Asociados, are a staple in this island republic. Edelca owner Carlos Montas, the Dominican Republic representative for Acoustiblok, Inc., consulted with Jay Boland of Acoustiblok, Inc. and recommended QuietFiber on the project after achieving excellent results with QuietFiber on a similar project at the La Sirena Superstore in the eastern coastal town of Higuey, Dominican Republic.

“Even though QuietFiber is not the least expensive product on the market, I keep coming back to it because the results beat all the competitors’ noise deadening products with double the noise insulating qualities,” Montas said. “The customer on this job wanted to install a double layer of a different product but I convinced him to try the QuietFiber.

“I’ve been designing and installing these emergency generators for 20 years, and I have never had the results from other noise abatement products that I have with QuietFiber, and now I’m trying to use it everywhere.”

Montas says noise from these industrial generators on which the island has become dependent in order to maintain consistent power is a major problem plaguing businesses and residential property owners when the generators are running.  Not only is generator noise bad for business, but its constant drone can cause permanent hearing loss. Chiller Noise No Longer Problem After Acoustifence Barrier Installed

SHEBOYGEN, Wisconsin, April 30, 2012 – Installation of a 24-foot noise barrier utilizing Acoustifence outdoor sound abatement material at the new Sheboygan Festival Foods store is complete, ending complaints from nearby residents over extreme levels of noise leaking from the store’s industrial refrigeration chillers into the community.

Folks in Sheboygen were celebrating when the popular Wisconsin-based Festival Foods grocery chain opened the 70,000 square foot mega store here on September 16, 2011. Less than two weeks later, the community’s warm welcome had grown icy as neighbors began to complain about noise from the store’s industrial refrigeration chiller that was so loud, it violated the city’s noise ordinance.  

Festival Foods enlisted the help of Acoustical Engineer Eric Wolfram of Milwaukee-based Scott R. Riedel & Associates, LTD, who consulted with Acoustiblok’s Jay Boland to choose Acoustifence noise barrier material, a product of Acoustiblok, Inc. of Tampa Florida, to bring the decibel level down below the legal threshold and restore peace and quiet to the neighboring community.

When Wolfram first investigated the site in September, decibel readings ranged between 78.4 and 90.7, loud enough to be a risk for noise-related health problems to nearby residents and workers, had they been subjected to the noise over time. The Sheboygan Department of City Development demanded the level be reduced by at least five decibels, Wolfram said.

“The existing refrigeration pump and motor systems produce extreme noise levels,” Wolfram said. “This noise reverberates within the sheet-metal paneled enclosure interior and escapes through several different exhaust and ventilation openings.

“Additional noise was generated by the cooling and exhaust fans mounted above the enclosure.”

Working with sound consultants from Acoustiblok, Inc., Wolfram designed a two-step solution, creating a barrier with Acoustifence noise deadening material to block noise around the massive system, and incorporating another Acoustiblok product, QuietFiber, to help reduce sound from reflecting off of the taller adjacent building behind the chillers.

Minimal structural changes were required, as the ⅛- inch Acoustifence was easily attached to an existing chain link fence and the outdoor-rated QuietFiber with a perforated metal cover was capconed to the building.

The results were better than Wolfram had hoped, with decibel levels reduced to 57.3 the moment the barrier was in place – well below the City’s legal threshold, and more than 20 decibels lower than before the Acoustiblok products were installed. Neighbors are no longer bombarded with the irritating chiller noise, now replaced with the ordinary ambient sounds that existed before.

Noise from Palm Beach County Water Treatment Plant Silenced With Acoustiblok “Hurricane” All Weather Sound Panels®

MANALAPAN, Florida, March 1, 2012 – Installation of Acoustiblok® “Hurricane” All Weather Sound Panels at a water treatment plant in the Manalapan-Hypoluxo island community of West Palm Beach is complete, ending an almost year-long battle to quiet noise that was bleeding from the plant into residential areas of the tiny island community.

In March, 2011 residents of the secluded community, tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach County, began complaining about noise from the island’s water treatment plant that was disrupting their tranquil setting. Town officials at first requested the plant be enclosed, but later deemed enclosure impractical and requested other options that would allow the sound insulating structure to be moved or removed, and would also allow easy access to the plant equipment for maintenance and repairs.

They eventually turned to Kurt King, an engineer with West Construction in nearby Lake Worth, to find a solution. King, an expert in creating noise barrier solutions for water treatment plants and other facilities with loud pumps, blowers, compressors, exhausts and industrial machinery, chose to install Acoustiblok’s Hurricane All Weather Sound Panels at the Manalapan Water Treatment facility.

“The kind of equipment used at a water treatment plant can be quite loud,” King said. “In this case, the noise was coming from two sites and bleeding into the adjoining neighborhood.”

Noise at the water treatment plant stemmed from a stand-alone pump station and a separate station with a blower and vacuum pump intake/exhaust, scrubber exhausts, compressors, vents and blow-downs.

With the help of Acoustiblok consultant Marilyn Myers, King designed an assembly of nine Acoustiblok Hurricane All Weather Sound Panels to place around the noisy pump station, and a 14-panel assembly around the exhaust blower site, using a combination of 4 foot x 8 foot and 4 foot x 10 foot panels.  Immediately upon installation, King said the decibel levels were reduced by 70 percent or more.

“In my opinion they worked very well,” King said. “The architect and property owners were very pleased, and the panels suited this job because they are engineered specifically to withstand outdoor elements in some rough weather areas like this one directly on the Atlantic shoreline.”

Ontario College Installs Acoustiblok to End Noise in Classrooms

ONTARIO, Canada, February 16, 2012 – In response to complaints that noise from the school cafeteria and loud plumbing rendered two classrooms unusable to students and teachers, Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario has installed Acoustiblok® in two classrooms to reduce noise leaking from a busy cafeteria below.

Fleming College Facilities Manager Mike Peart decided to install Acoustiblok 3mm noise abatement material after researching sound deadening products to find an affordable solution, and discussing his options with Steve Hibbens, an acoustical consultant from Acoustiblok, Inc.

This type of noise problem is not uncommon in schools and other public and commercial buildings that were designed and built without acoustical principles in mind.

The noise permeating the classroom created a serious distraction for students and teachers, and eventually the classroom had to be abandoned until the problem could be resolved. Fleming College hired Beavermead Construction of Peterborough to install Acoustiblok on the walls and in the drop ceiling of the first classroom, resulting in a 12 decibel sound decrease.

“The room measured at 58 dBs before we installed Acoustiblok, and it measured at 46 dBs as soon as the installation was complete,” Peart said. “We are really impressed with it; it did exactly what we were told it would do.”

John Kraetzer of Beavermead Construction said the product went in easily, and made such an impact on the noise problem that his company decided to purchase it for another Peterborough project he was working on, a government building that required soundproofing between government building offices and a prayer center that shared a common wall.

“They told us to use a product called Green Glue, but we had already installed the Acoustiblok at Fleming College and I knew how well it worked there, so I decided to use it on this project as well,” Kraetzer said.

“They were thrilled with the results too.”

After the first installation, Peart said he had Acoustiblok installed in a second classroom plagued with noise problems coming from plumbing pipes within the wall, with the same excellent results they had in the first classroom.

“We’re really happy with the Acoustiblok treatments,” Peart said.

Power outages are a common occurrence in the Dominican Republic, and industrial noise pollution from emergency generators is a growing concern. One DC generator designer is using QuietFiber noise absorbing material to lower the decibel levels at the La Serena superstore in Higuey.

HIGUEY, Dominican Republic, January 3, 2011 – Installation of QuietFiber® noise absorbing material has been completed in the massive generator room of the newly constructed La Sirena superstore in the eastern coastal town of Higuey, Dominican Republic.

By installing Acoustiblok All Weather Sound Panels around four extremely high decibel vacuum pumps, a Wisconsin-based pizza crust manufacturer brought noise levels down to levels below OSHA standards – low enough to protect the hearing and health of staff working around the pumps without requiring industrial earplugs.

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin, August 8, 2011 – A Green Bay pizza crust manufacturer has installed Acoustiblok® All Weather Sound Panels around four high decibel, industrial vacuum pumps to bring noise levels in their plants down to OSHA demands.

Alive and Kickin’ Plant Engineer Dennis Dolski said the original intention was to find a product that would reduce the high noise levels that were making working conditions unbearable for employees who worked within 10- to 30-feet of the plant’s 90- to 95-decibel vacuum pumps, which operate 24 hours per day, six days per week.

“The driving force was the protection of our employees, and we became cognizant of OSHA standards for noise in the workplace,” Dolski said. “But we were also dealing with an extremely high heat issue, so we needed a sound deadening product that would also allow us to address ventilation needs, and the All Weather Sound Panels suited the project perfectly.”

With  advice from Acoustiblok consultant Jay Boland, Dolski said that they used Acoustiblok’s four- by four-foot and four- by eight panels to create enclosures around each vacuum pump, allowing fans to be installed in the bottom of each unit for ventilation.

“We tried a few different noise abatement measures, but everything we came across was costly for the company and a pain for the employees,” he said.  “They were thrilled after the panels went in and they no longer had to wear ear plugs, everybody’s thrilled with the results of the panels.”

Port City Bakery, Inc., parent company of Alive and Kickin’ Pizza, hired Loss Control Consultant Dan Dudly of West Bend Mutual Insurance Company to conduct sound level meter testing of the vacuum pumps after the Acoustiblok All Weather Sound Panels were installed, with calculations done in accordance to OSHA guidelines.

According to Dudly’s report, measurements were made utilizing procedures outlined by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Readings were taken on the A‐scale, slow response network defined by ANSI S1.4 for Type II sound level meters. Noise level measurements were obtained using a Quest Electronics Micro‐15 / set in the integrating sound level measurement mode. The meter was calibrated both prior to and following use, with a Quest Electronics QC‐10 calibrator. The integration time was set at one second.

“The most significant reduction in noise occurred when you enclosed the four vacuum pumps,” Dudly said.  “(Alive and Kickin’ Pizza) reduced the noise levels under OSHA’s Action Level of 85 decibels.”

In fact, the noise levels were reduced to a measurement of between 70- and 79- decibels (representing a 75-percent reduction in sound to the human ear) Dolski said, depending on the amount of ambient noise coming from other parts of the plant.
