TAMPA, FL, January 16, 2013 – An Acoustifence barrier recently installed near a noisy exposed aerator motor at the Hillsborough County Northwest Regional Facility resulted in an immediate and significant reduction in noise pollution for neighboring residents. 

The facility is part of a 1,500-acre multi-use tract owned by Hillsborough County. It is a Type 1 advanced wastewater treatment facility built to process five million gallons of wastewater per day. The facility is located on a 67-acre parcel of land 10890 South Mobley Road in Hillsborough County Florida. A residential community called Highland Park is located near the county facility.

Last year, members of the Highland Park Residential Community voiced their complaints about loud whining noises coming into their community from the nearby county facility. The facility took action to find a solution to the noise issue. In residential areas, road traffic noise is usually the major source of noise, with air conditioning/heat pumps, generators, construction, and industrial noises also problems typically.

Wastewater is sewage, storm water and water that are used for various purposes around the community. Unless properly treated, wastewater can harm public health and the environment. It is not uncommon across the United States for wastewater treatment facilities like Northwest to be located within hearing range of residents living in a particular area.

The wastewater treatment facility noise source was a 200-HP Carrousel vertical, high efficiency aerator drive motor located on top of the facility’s 24-foot Oxidation Aeration Basin structure according to Flint Seth, general manager of bio solids production and maintenance at the Hillsborough County Northwest Water Reclamation Facility.

Doug Fisher of the Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department worked with Acoustiblok to devise an economical solution consisting of an L-shaped frame barrier with four 6 X 30 foot-Acoustifence outdoor noise reduction panels secured to it. Acoustifence is a product of Acoustiblok Corporation. Witt Fence Company of Riverview, Fla., was contacted by Hillsborough County personnel to install the barrier.

From a technical standpoint, Acoustifence is an advanced sound barrier. A sound barrier, by its own named definition, is put between the noise source and the listener. Some barriers can be made of virtually anything that sound does not penetrate. There are however, differences and distinct advantages in some over others. Unlike a concrete block wall, which in one respect is a good sound barrier, the Acoustifence actually flexes with certain frequencies, especially very low frequencies. In the process of sound waves physically moving it, the product transforms sound wave energy into inaudible internal friction energy. A concrete block wall would not do this. As the Acoustifence is only 1/8 of an inch thick, it is very easy to position it closer to the noise source. The closer a barrier is to the noise source the more restricting it becomes to the initial sound waves.

Acoustiblok Corporation’s Acoustifence product is a unique proprietary formula. It is a heavy mineral filled viscoelastic polymer material that is 1/8 inch thick and made in the United States. It comes in 6 X 30 foot-sheets. It is one of the most effective first steps in reducing noise for many applications including industrial, commercial, and residential. The amount of noise it reduces however is much related to other reflective structures in the area.

Sound pressure is measured in decibels. The average person can hear sounds starting at 0 to 1 decibel. A typical conversation occurs at 60 decibels – not loud enough to cause damage. An idling bulldozer (not bulldozing) is loud enough at 85 decibels that it can cause permanent damage after only 1 work day (8 hours). If a sound reaches 85 decibels or stronger, it can cause permanent damage to a person’s hearing with prolonged exposure. The amount of time a person listens to a sound affects how much damage it will cause.

A noise meter was used to measure the difference in sound before and after the installation of the noise barrier fence at the wastewater facility. Typical noise from these Carrousel vertical aerator motors ranges from 80-83 decibels from three feet away according to the manufacturer. From 10 feet away, the noise measured 79 decibels before installation of the Acoustifence began and registered 69 decibels immediately after the fence was in place. In a 10 decibel decrease in sound level, perceived loudness is cut in half to the human ear.

"While we were pleased with the reduction in sound decibels picked up by the meter, the most significant difference that we noticed was the reduction in noise heard by the ear. The reduction in noise felt significantly higher than what registered on the sound meter," said Seth.

According to OSHA, typical engine noise, mainly caused by mechanical and combustion forces, can typically range from 100 - 121 decibels measured at approximately 10 feet.

Besides the proven and tested sound reduction qualities of Acoustifence, another beneficial quality of the product is that it is quick and easy to install. "Once we determine the technical solution to a noise issue, the installation of our products is not time consuming or labor intensive," said Lahnie Johnson, President and Founder of Acoustiblok.

Installation of the sound barrier at the Hillsborough County facility was fast and they encountered no unexpected problems. "It took only one day to install the barrier and it resulted in an immediate decrease in directional noise for our facility," Seth said.

While the solution to the noise issue at the wastewater treatment facility was not a complex one, it was an effective one for Hillsborough County. "The Acoustifence barrier made a difference and we are very pleased with it. We have not received any new complaints about the motor noise since the installation of the barrier fence so that’s a good sign so far. We are currently planning to build additional barrier fences for some of the other vertical aerator motors we have on site," Seth added.

While Hillsborough County is happy with how the small amount of Acoustifence quieted the large pump, Johnson sees this as the first of literally thousands of similar pumps around the country and overseas hat may need a similar noise abatement solution.

Acoustiblok Donates Wallcover Noise Abatement Material to Children’s Home

TAMPA, Florida, November 5, 2012, 2012 – Tampa-based Acoustiblok, Inc. has donated its noise reducing Acoustiblok Wallcover® material to the Bellewood Home for Children in Anchorage Kentucky, to block noise from the campus’s multi-machine laundry room from passing through a common wall and into the facility’s therapy room. Installation of the Acoustiblok Wallcover effectively reduced noise in the therapy room by 10 decibels, which translates to a perceived volume reduction of 50 percent.

The donated Acoustiblok Wallcover was installed last week as part of a large-scale project to restore and improve the facility’s five residential cottages, recreational areas and common buildings, and to improve safety and enhance Bellewood Home’s village setting.

For 163 years, Bellewood Home has provided a safe haven for thousands of abused, neglected and homeless children from across Kentucky.

Lahnie Johnson, President and Founder of Acoustiblok, Inc., says he is proud that the company was able to contribute the noise blocking qualities of Acoustiblok Wallcover to the ambitious renovation project at Bellewood.

TAMPA, Florida, September 27, 2012 – Acoustiblok, Inc. Founder and President Lahnie Johnson this week approved a working agreement with Carlos Montas as Acoustiblok’s manufacturing representative in the Dominican Republic. Montas, Engineering Manager of Electicidad del Caribe SRL (EDELCA) in Santo Domingo, will represent Acoustiblok sound abatement products throughout the Dominican Republic.

Montas, a native of the Dominican Republic, is a 2005 graduate of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC). He has built a career in the design, installation, and supervision of emergency generator systems in the industrial and commercial communities throughout the Caribbean.  He was first introduced to Acoustiblok products after installing QuietFiber noise absorbing material in one of EDELCA’s massive generator system projects to dramatically lessen the impact of the high decibel generator noise outside the generator facility.

Acoustiblok Creates Damped, Expandable Acoustical Envelope in New York ITB Recording Studio

MEDFORD, New York, May 2, 2012 – Acoustiblok noise abatement material was installed in the nearly completed Artist Workshop Studios recording facility, an in-the-box (ITB) studio designed and built by Artist Workshop Studios owner Tom Donofrio.  Acoustiblok was chosen to provide a sound barrier for the small, 12 foot x 12 foot basement studio that could drop decibels levels within the space and provide a neutral acoustical environment for recording.

Donofrio, an electrical engineer, and musician who has built recording studios in the past using different sound deadening materials, chose Acoustiblok for his newest project after consulting with Marilyn Myers of Acoustiblok, Inc., because of its sound damping and noise blocking qualities, as well as its thin, flexible structure that adds no volume to walls within the studio space. Attached to the studs before drywall is hung, Acoustiblok performs without the need to add layers of rigid drywall or modified drywall, a method Donofrio used in the past with mixed results and significant floor space reduction.

“I was looking for a product that would lower the decibels in the studio without taking up any additional space,” Donofrio said. “I was able to achieve the neutral acoustics desired in the space, which makes me extremely happy.

“I didn’t want a sound quality that was too dead or too live, so the Acoustiblok turned out to be an excellent choice.”

Donofrio and a friend were able to hang the 3mm Acoustiblok on the newly framed stud walls within the studio space, including cutouts around a window and electric sockets, and seal the seams according to installation recommendations, all in less than four hours.

The Artist Workshop Studios recording space was built for Donofrio to indulge his own talents as an acoustical guitarist and vocalist, and to be made available to artists on a budget who need an affordable studio with high quality production equipment and the expertise of a seasoned technician to record a song or album.

Chiller Noise No Longer Problem After Acoustifence Barrier Installed

SHEBOYGEN, Wisconsin, April 30, 2012 – Installation of a 24-foot noise barrier utilizing Acoustifence outdoor sound abatement material at the new Sheboygan Festival Foods store is complete, ending complaints from nearby residents over extreme levels of noise leaking from the store’s industrial refrigeration chillers into the community.

Folks in Sheboygen were celebrating when the popular Wisconsin-based Festival Foods grocery chain opened the 70,000 square foot mega store here on September 16, 2011. Less than two weeks later, the community’s warm welcome had grown icy as neighbors began to complain about noise from the store’s industrial refrigeration chiller that was so loud, it violated the city’s noise ordinance.  

Festival Foods enlisted the help of Acoustical Engineer Eric Wolfram of Milwaukee-based Scott R. Riedel & Associates, LTD, who consulted with Acoustiblok’s Jay Boland to choose Acoustifence noise barrier material, a product of Acoustiblok, Inc. of Tampa Florida, to bring the decibel level down below the legal threshold and restore peace and quiet to the neighboring community.

When Wolfram first investigated the site in September, decibel readings ranged between 78.4 and 90.7, loud enough to be a risk for noise-related health problems to nearby residents and workers, had they been subjected to the noise over time. The Sheboygan Department of City Development demanded the level be reduced by at least five decibels, Wolfram said.

“The existing refrigeration pump and motor systems produce extreme noise levels,” Wolfram said. “This noise reverberates within the sheet-metal paneled enclosure interior and escapes through several different exhaust and ventilation openings.

“Additional noise was generated by the cooling and exhaust fans mounted above the enclosure.”

Working with sound consultants from Acoustiblok, Inc., Wolfram designed a two-step solution, creating a barrier with Acoustifence noise deadening material to block noise around the massive system, and incorporating another Acoustiblok product, QuietFiber, to help reduce sound from reflecting off of the taller adjacent building behind the chillers.

Minimal structural changes were required, as the ⅛- inch Acoustifence was easily attached to an existing chain link fence and the outdoor-rated QuietFiber with a perforated metal cover was capconed to the building.

The results were better than Wolfram had hoped, with decibel levels reduced to 57.3 the moment the barrier was in place – well below the City’s legal threshold, and more than 20 decibels lower than before the Acoustiblok products were installed. Neighbors are no longer bombarded with the irritating chiller noise, now replaced with the ordinary ambient sounds that existed before.

Sounds from local traffic and roadways exceeded that of the compressor equipment after installation of the Acoustifence and QuietFiber products,” Wolfram said.

BRISBANE, Australia, April 18, 2012 – Acoustiblok USA announced this week that it has teamed with Stephen Nolan of Brisbane to be the sound abatement material company’s main distributor for Australia.

Developed to address a lack of effective and available soundproofing material options in Australia, Nolan saw the opportunity to make Acoustiblok products available to Australians who are ready to address noise pollution problems in their homes and yards, businesses, schools, hospitals, and anywhere noise is a problem.

“Not many sound proofing products are available in this part of the world, so it is about time we changed that,” Nolan said. “Acoustiblok has been tested by independent laboratories in the U.S., which offers testimony to the product’s effectiveness.

Noise pollution in Australia, like most of the developed world, has reached epidemic levels. One in six Australians has suffered from hearing loss, 37 percent due to noise exposure. By 2050, that number is expected to reach 50 percent, according to Australian Government Hearing Services.

Design Breakthrough: Portable Audio Device for Cochlear Implant Testing Incorporates Acoustiblok

GOUDA, The Netherlands, March 21, 2012 – Noise control engineers from ABC International Trade B.V., in concert with engineers at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, and Akoestische Bouw Constructies BV., have incorporated Acoustiblok® noise abatement material into the design of the OtoCube®, the first and only fully equipped desktop audio booth for testing and calibrating the cochlear implants of deaf individuals.

A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. Audiologists currently use test rooms or screening booths that measure between five feet and six feet tall to measure and calibrate CI devices to suit each individual patient’s level of deafness, sensitivity, and CI performance.

By simply connecting the OtoCube via a computer USB port, it is ready to perform all audio logical tests available through its large-scale, non-portable predecessors. In order to meet the standards for blocking ambient noise that would make this portable unit as effective as the large booths, engineers at the University of Antwerp and ABC B.V. applied a 3mm layer of Acoustiblok noise blocking material within the unit, creating a sound insulation layer without adding weight or taking up too much space within the small box.

Development of the OtoCube was based on an idea from Paul J. Govaerts, MD of the Eargroup in Antwerp, and with a grant (European subvention) from Belgium-based Otoconsult (7FP-SME-2266 Opti-Fox) to improve the standards of CI-fitting.

“This is a very small audio logical box into which the receiver portion of the CI is placed and then connected to the deaf patient,” said Haico van Oosten, a Research and Development Engineer in the University of Antwerp’s Biomedical Physics department.  

“To perform the testing, it must be quiet in this box, but finding the right material for the sound insulation portion of the design was a difficult task.

“We were able to achieve the overall sound insulation, light weight, and slim design we were after, and an overall sound insulation level of 40 to 60 dBs after the installation of Acoustiblok,” van Oosten said. “Acoustiblok was just what we needed.”

The OtoCube weighs less than 15 kg (33 pounds), according to Ad Vreeswijk, ABC International Trading B.V.’s General Manager Europe. The sound insulation qualities of the Acoustiblok, Vreeswijk says, help the OtoCube set a new standard in precision, usability, and sound insulation for ambient noise.

Programming a cochlear implant is a technical intervention, which is done only by a trained audiologist. Achieving the best possible programming of the bio-electrical device is the audiologist’s primary goal when testing and calibrating each individual’s cochlear implant. The OtoCube provides a portable device that can reach many patients when access to a testing booth is impractical or impossible.

The OtoCube prototype, currently being clinically tested in several European clinics, is expected to be marketed by 2013.

There are approximately 240,000 cochlear implant recipients worldwide, including 41,500 adults and more than 30,000 children in the U.S. Only one in approximately 130 people around the world who could benefit from a cochlear implant has received one. However, since 2004, U.S. health policies have been put in place to increase CI recipients by 10 percent.

Noise from Palm Beach County Water Treatment Plant Silenced With Acoustiblok “Hurricane” All Weather Sound Panels®

MANALAPAN, Florida, March 1, 2012 – Installation of Acoustiblok® “Hurricane” All Weather Sound Panels at a water treatment plant in the Manalapan-Hypoluxo island community of West Palm Beach is complete, ending an almost year-long battle to quiet noise that was bleeding from the plant into residential areas of the tiny island community.

In March, 2011 residents of the secluded community, tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach County, began complaining about noise from the island’s water treatment plant that was disrupting their tranquil setting. Town officials at first requested the plant be enclosed, but later deemed enclosure impractical and requested other options that would allow the sound insulating structure to be moved or removed, and would also allow easy access to the plant equipment for maintenance and repairs.

They eventually turned to Kurt King, an engineer with West Construction in nearby Lake Worth, to find a solution. King, an expert in creating noise barrier solutions for water treatment plants and other facilities with loud pumps, blowers, compressors, exhausts and industrial machinery, chose to install Acoustiblok’s Hurricane All Weather Sound Panels at the Manalapan Water Treatment facility.

“The kind of equipment used at a water treatment plant can be quite loud,” King said. “In this case, the noise was coming from two sites and bleeding into the adjoining neighborhood.”

Noise at the water treatment plant stemmed from a stand-alone pump station and a separate station with a blower and vacuum pump intake/exhaust, scrubber exhausts, compressors, vents and blow-downs.

With the help of Acoustiblok consultant Marilyn Myers, King designed an assembly of nine Acoustiblok Hurricane All Weather Sound Panels to place around the noisy pump station, and a 14-panel assembly around the exhaust blower site, using a combination of 4 foot x 8 foot and 4 foot x 10 foot panels.  Immediately upon installation, King said the decibel levels were reduced by 70 percent or more.

“In my opinion they worked very well,” King said. “The architect and property owners were very pleased, and the panels suited this job because they are engineered specifically to withstand outdoor elements in some rough weather areas like this one directly on the Atlantic shoreline.”

Lahnie Johnson, founder and president of Acoustiblok, Inc., said the Hurricane model of the company’s All Weather Sound Panel was specifically designed for settings like this one on the Manalapan-Hypoluxo island.

Ontario College Installs Acoustiblok to End Noise in Classrooms

ONTARIO, Canada, February 16, 2012 – In response to complaints that noise from the school cafeteria and loud plumbing rendered two classrooms unusable to students and teachers, Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario has installed Acoustiblok® in two classrooms to reduce noise leaking from a busy cafeteria below.

Fleming College Facilities Manager Mike Peart decided to install Acoustiblok 3mm noise abatement material after researching sound deadening products to find an affordable solution, and discussing his options with Steve Hibbens, an acoustical consultant from Acoustiblok, Inc.

Acoustiblok Soundproofing Material installed in classroomPeart said that the cafeteria noise was infiltrating the classroom above it through the wall cavity and a series of exhaust vents that acted as a conduit for noise between the floors. This type of noise problem is not uncommon in schools and other public and commercial buildings that were designed and built without acoustical principles in mind.

The noise permeating the classroom created a serious distraction for students and teachers, and eventually the classroom had to be abandoned until the problem could be resolved. Fleming College hired Beavermead Construction of Peterborough to install Acoustiblok on the walls and in the drop ceiling of the first classroom, resulting in a 12 decibel sound decrease.

“The room measured at 58 dBs before we installed Acoustiblok, and it measured at 46 dBs as soon as the installation was complete,” Peart said. “We are really impressed with it; it did exactly what we were told it would do.”

John Kraetzer of Beavermead Construction said the product went in easily, and made such an impact on the noise problem that his company decided to purchase it for another Peterborough project he was working on, a government building that required soundproofing between government building offices and a prayer center that shared a common wall.

“They told us to use a product called Green Glue, but we had already installed the Acoustiblok at Fleming College and I knew how well it worked there, so I decided to use it on this project as well,” Kraetzer said.

“They were thrilled with the results too.”

After the first installation, Peart said he had Acoustiblok installed in a second classroom plagued with noise problems coming from plumbing pipes within the wall, with the same excellent results they had in the first classroom.

“We’re really happy with the Acoustiblok treatments,” Peart said.
