High Velocity Blower Noise in Pharmaceutical Lab Resolved

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, October 11, 2012 – Acoustiblok, Inc., announced today that the recent installation of Acoustiblok noise blocking material and QuietFiber sound absorbing material at the Ethical Labs production plant in Santo Domingo has provided enough noise abatement to lower noise levels in a louvered structure housing industrial high velocity blowers by 71 percent.

The Acoustiblok and QuietFiber installation, conducted by Carlos Montas, the Dominican Republic representative for Acoustiblok, Inc., lowered decibel levels from 80dB to 62dB, even with a portion of the louvers remaining open.

Montas, owner of Edelca – the industrial power engineering company that prepared the electrical system of the entire pharmaceutical production plant – says the project required layering Acoustiblok 3mm soundproofing material in the structure first, followed by a layer of QuietFiber sound absorbing material on top of the Acoustiblok, on both the interior walls and door of the metal structure.

Representatives of Ethical Labs said they were thrilled with the results, which took the unbearably loud blower noise down to a decibel level that was no longer a distraction to anyone.

“We are totally impressed with how well the products worked,” says Carlos Mendez of Ethical Labs. “When the project was half way done we could already hear a difference, it’s amazing.”

Montas, who designs and installs industrial emergency generators throughout the Caribbean’s coastal regions, installs QuietFiber in all of his projects to deaden industrial noise.  Both the Acoustiblok and Quiet Fiber materials are easily cut to fit around electric conduits, and secured to the walls and ceiling with standard insulation stick pins.

The sound deadening qualities of the layered Acoustiblok and QuietFiber materials will help to protect the pharmaceutical plant’s employees and visitors from the high volume industrial noise contained within the enclosure.

Ceres Police Dept. Installs Acoustiblok in Interrogation/Interview Rooms

Acoustiblok noise barrier material provided the level of privacy and sound proofing needed for police officials, crime victims and witnesses without fear of being overheard outside of the department’s interview and interrogation rooms.

CERES, California, July 11, 2011 – With the installation of Acoustiblok noise abatement material in the ceilings and walls of two critical rooms within the Ceres Police Department’s downtown headquarters, witnesses and victims will be afforded the discretion and privacy they deserve during police interviews, and suspect interrogations will take place without external distractions or interruptions.

The decision to install Acoustiblok noise deadening material into the interview and
interrogation rooms in the Ceres Police Department came at the urging of Sgt. James Robbins, who said the acoustics in the “soft” room -- the room used specifically to interview victims and witnesses -- were hampered by noise coming from a restroom on one side of the room, and the department’s often noisy IT department on the other side.

The larger 15-foot by 20-foot interrogation room was divided into three rooms, one to house sensitive recording equipment; the other two rooms were used to question suspects.

“Before we put the Acoustiblok in place, it was difficult to interrogate suspects even though they were in separate rooms because there was virtually no soundproofing,” said Sgt. Robbins" ”If we were interviewing two suspects about the same crime, they could hear what each other was saying, and they would yell back and forth to each other through the common wall, making it impossible to question each individual privately.”

After consulting Acoustiblok COO Marilyn Myers, decided to install the Acoustiblok in the smaller “soft” room first to test its capabilities. The room’s original drywall was removed and the product attached to the studs, per installation standards. Next, the Acoustiblok was installed in the room’s hanging ceiling and the seams were sealed with Acoustiblok tape to create a total sound barrier.

“It worked so well, we were thrilled, and we were able to move on to the larger
interrogation/recording room to create the same noise barrier we had achieved in the “soft” room,” Robbins said.

Since it was built in 1987, the building was not designed with any forethought regarding soundproofing or additional high tech retrofits, making the ceiling installation a challenge, according to Robbins. The Acoustiblok had to be cut to fit around pipes, HVAC ducts and other obstacles. Even with the extra care required for the ceiling installation, the soft room took only two days to complete.


When it came time to retrofit the larger interrogation/recording room, however, officials decided at first not to attempt a ceiling installation and installed the Acoustiblok in the walls alone. They quickly realized that sound bleeding was still a problem between the rooms due to the ceiling void, and decided to install Acoustiblok in the ceiling after all.

“The second room took about a week, because it was larger and the ceiling installation was challenging, but in the end we were very happy with the outcome,” Robbins said.

“It’s always a wonderful feeling when our noise abatement products are used in such an important project,” said Lahnie Johnson, president and founder of Acoustiblok, Inc.

“I understand that there was some resistance from city officials to install noise barrier material when Sgt. Robbins first broached the subject, but his persistence paid off.

“Now Ceres citizens have the benefit of privacy when they find themselves in the
position of discussing sensitive matters with police officials, and the officers themselves are better able to interrogate suspects uninterrupted, thanks to this simple fix that provided serious noise abatement results.”

TAMPA, Fla. (USA), May 3, 2011 – Lahnie Johnson, president and founder of Acoustiblok, Inc., has named Paul Getts as the company’s newest sales associate.

Getts, a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana has lived in Florida for more than 30 years, and in Tampa for the past three years. Prior to joining the Acoustiblok sales team, Getts  was a statewide outside sales rep for Tampa-based All Solar Power, and a factory rep for both Seabridge Bathing and Aquassure Bathing, which provide bathing products for the disabled.

Getts studied Art and Design at the Ringling College of Art and Design, and Delgado Community College in New Orleans.

Sharma’s duties will include involvement in engineering, design, product development, research and manufacturing for the company’s line of sound abatement products under the Acoustiblok® label, and the company’s Thermablok® aerogel thermal insulation products.

As Director of Engineering for Acoustiblok, Sharma will participate in determining the business’s strategy and vision, and for engineering consultancy and global business operations.

Sharma, a native of Jaipur, India, moved to Tampa from Brunei in 1998. He brings more than 15 years’ experience in consulting, design engineering and project management for industrial, governmental and public agencies in the U.S., India and Brunei.

Sharma earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Jaipur, India.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Acoustiblok® sound abatement material was chosen to provide state-of-the-art acoustical balance in the musicians’ rehearsal studios at the Center for Social Action Through Music Center in Caracas, Venezuela.

Acoustiblok was installed within the wall surfaces, floors and ceilings of the practice rooms within the orchestral center, which is divided into two main zones: the northern zone, where the academic activities are developed, and the southern zone, which consists of the Simón Bolívar Concert Hall with a seating capacity of 1,100. The southern zone is also composed of  the Concert Hall No. 2, with a seating capacity of 400, and a range of rehearsal rooms, recording studios and music workshops.

The Center is an eleven-story building designed by Venezuelan architect Tomás Lugo that also includes libraries, an outdoor acoustic shell, recording rooms, changing rooms, cafés, and administrative offices.

Consultants for the State Foundation for the National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras of Venezuela (FESNOJIV) chose Acoustiblok for its proven ability to effective reduce sound transmission. Acoustiblok Reduces Unsafe Industrial Noise at Energy Plant

TAMPA, Fla. (USA) – Public awareness of the health risks of industry-related noise pollution has never been higher. Industrial plants worldwide are incorporating serious sound abatement strategies into their infrastructure to protect employees and visitors from hearing loss and other medical issues raised by industrial noise pollution.

Supervisors at the South Broward Waste to Energy (WTE) plant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were faced with a 30-day project to overhaul the plant’s turbine. The plant’s steam bypass system would take over the turbine’s 24-hours a day waste management responsibilities for one full month.

The problem with the transition was the unbearable blare of the bypass system. The bypass channels 900 pounds per square inch of compressed steam through a 14-inch pipe into a 7-foot diameter pipe at a noise level of 126-dB. This is an unsafe level equilevent to jackhammer or jet engine launch.

The noise was so deafening that even with earplugs, employees and visiting contractors could not spend more than brief periods of time in the vicinity without risking hearing damage. Verbal communication was impossible, even if they shouted, while working on or around the system.

The decision to install Acoustiblok® sound abatement material to the bypass system was made after Acoustiblok’s Shawn Saathoff, president/director of Acoustiblok Middle East, evaluated the site and proposed a blanket application of Acoustiblok’s 1/8-inch thick
proprietary viscoelastic polymer with a Sound Transmission Classification (STC) of 26, unmatched in its versatility. Since the bypass system is composed of pipes elevated more than five stories, Acoustiblok’s ease of installation, flexibility, effectiveness, and environmentally friendly properties and made it ideal for the job.

The South Broward WTE facility is owned by Wheelabrator Technologies, an OSHA recognized and award-winning clean energy facilitator. With plants across the United States, Wheelabrator prides itself on its commitment to environmental responsibility. This makes Wheelabrator a natural match for eco-friendly Acoustiblok. The sound proofing material contains no lead, barium, or asbestos. It is UV resistant, impervious to water and mold. Acoustiblok is UL fire rated and classified for wall, floor and ceiling installations as well as industrial applications.

However, while solving the sound abatement issues, a new problem arose. The heat emitted from the compressed steam travelling through the bypass system reaches temperatures as high as 350-degrees. Yet Acoustiblok’s standard application range is 200-degrees before its viscosity is challenged.

After conferring with Thermablok® Sales Professional Steve Hibbens, South Broward WTE Maintenance Manager Paul Benton chose to gird the system with a 5-mm layer of Thermablok insulating material before applying the Acoustiblok.

Thermablok adapts aerogel technology developed by NASA to create the highest insulating material in existence. Composed almost completely of air, aerogel is known as "liquid smoke." Previously, aerogel had been difficult to adapt to most uses because of its fragility. Thermablok overcomes this by using a unique patented fiber to suspend a proprietary formula of aerogel so that it can be bent or compressed while still retaining its amazing insulation properties.

Although this type of project had never been attempted before, both teams gambled successfully on the results of scientific studies performed on both Thermablok and Acoustiblok to determine the best solution to thwart the offending noise and deal with the associated heat issue.

Benton said that the need for noise abatement at the plant had been brewing for some time before the turbine overhaul created the incentive he needed to take action.

One contractor found the extreme, unrelenting howl of the bypass system so difficult to work with, he began to dramatically hike the cost for his crews to work on site.

“Not only had it become a health issue, it had become a financial issue as well,” Benton said. ”Contractors were going to charge more to work here, and employees would have to severely reduce their hours to minimize exposure to the noise.”

The massive pipes were enveloped first in 1,280 square feet of Thermablok High Temp, then in 1,575 square feet of Acoustiblok by a four-man crew from Coastal Insulation in Pompano Beach, FL. Steve Sill, vice president of Coastal Insulation, said the job, which took three weeks to complete, was imposing only because of the sheer size of the system.

“It was challenging in that we were working off lifts higher than five stories,” he said. “But we were surprised how easy the material was to install, and how well it worked.

“We couldn’t believe the difference,” Sill said after the application of Acoustiblok was complete. “We measured a 26-28 dB attenuation, which was significant enough that contractors could actually hold a conversation while standing next to the structure,
whereas before you couldn’t be heard if you screamed.

“This success became even more amazing when the plant manager told us that the factory was running at nearly 50% greater capacity than when the original readings were taken.”

For crews to work under such conditions is actually painful at such a noise level, and studies confirm the adverse health effects of industrial noise pollution on workers in such an environment. Benton, too, was amazed at the results of the black Acoustiblok material seamed with black and yellow Acoustigrip permanent bonding tape, which far surpassed his expectations.

“We wouldn’t have cared if it was magenta with white polka dots, we would use it again, we were so happy with the results,” Benton said.

Acoustiblok is made of a 1/8” (3 mm) thick proprietary viscoelastic polymer material with a high-density mineral content, heavy yet extremely flexible.
